Why your vacation won’t have a positive effect

The holidays are just around the corner for many people. Of course you are already looking forward to standing in line for 4 hours at Schiphol or at the fast charging station in France. Vacation is basically good, very good in fact. The effects of vacation go beyond just your mental state, it has been proven that eliminating stress, eating better and exercising a little more during vacation can prevent heart problems. If you’re looking for another reason to go this summer, this is it!

Then the bad news. Unfortunately, you will not be happier with a holiday. 10 years ago, researchers from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam already investigated the effects and whether you come back from your holiday happier. The research shows that the run-up to your holiday is more important than the holiday itself. You often get more energy from that than from the holiday itself. To make matters worse, people who go on vacation are not measurably happier than people who do go on vacation. So it has a very small effect on how you feel.

Even extending your vacation will not make you a happier person after your vacation. The solution is obvious. Micro-dosing your holidays throughout the year ensures that you do have the boost of preparation and the short breather, but you do not have to get used to it after your holiday. According to the studies, indirectly, there is also less stress when you take shorter trips. Of course, someone has to take you over so that you don’t have twice as much work when you come back.

Going on holiday more often and for shorter periods while avoiding stress of coming back is the motto.

Was that all? No definitely not. In addition, 32% of people who go on vacation suffer from the “re-entry syndrome” or “post vacation blues”. They have trouble reintegrating when they come back and feel less well than before they left. Scientists attribute the effect to the stress you experience from having to get used to habits and customs that you let go of while on vacation. Getting into the rhythm of your stand-ups, meetings and KPIs costs you a lot of energy. In addition, if the work you do is not 100% within your passion, it is even more difficult.

That is of course very interesting when you see people in your environment stressing out hard to get all the work done before the holidays. What is all this stress for?

The answer is simple! Not.

All studies indicate that people who live and work in a satisfying environment are less affected by the negative effects after their vacation. So it’s not just about the content of the job, but also how you feel there. If you are in an environment where you feel good, you prefer to go back there. It’s that simple!

So now is the time to ensure that you do not immediately build up your blood pressure after your holiday. Start shaping your future before you go on vacation!

How do you do that? Make a plan of who you want to be in the future. How do you want to feel and how do you get there. Make a big plan that you divide into pieces so that they are feasible and manageable. If you start doing that before you go on vacation, you immediately have something to look forward to when you get back.

And then the sales pitch: Direction is your stick behind the door to shape your future and get there. No coach. No course. Well action.

Every week a 10-minute episode, a short homework assignment that makes you think and a stick behind the door to actively start shaping your future.

Ideal to start with during your holiday. Don’t wait too long because we only start on the first Monday of the month.
